Community Based Laboratory Facilities:
A reliable community based laboratory service is one of the most
important ways of improving the quality of primary health care center and
avoiding patients and pregnant women having to travel to the district hospital
for essential laboratory testes.
T o be effective in PHC
community based laboratory.
Practice Must:
- Meet the health needs of individuals and the community.
- Operate in an acceptable way.
- Be accessible to the community and affordable.
- Be reliable and sustainable.
Activities of community based PHC Laboratory at THC and Lower Level:
1. To
investigate by referral or testing on site, important diseases and health
problems affecting the local community, Depending on geographical area such
investigation are usually includes the following:
a.
Performs procedures and methods for different investigations of clinical
pathology and Hematology and semen analysis,
b.
Performs procedures and methods for examinations of various specimen for Gram
staining , Geimsa staining and Albert’s staining.
c.
Performs procedures and methods for limited investigations on Bio-chemistry,
serologi
and other tests s feasible at the PHC level.
2. To
assist the health worker in deciding the severity of a patient’s condition and prognosis.
3. To
promote health care and assist in community health education.
4.
Prepare reagents required for Laboratory investigation at THC level.
5. To
screen pregnant women for Anemia, Proteinuria and Malaria and refer serum to
the district hospital laboratory for antibody screening of sexually transmitted
disease such as Syphilis.
