Water bath
Purpose of water bath : Water bath is required to
incubate bottles of culture media,
liquid in flasks or other large containers and when incubating samples in test
tube racks.
Specification of water bath for the district laboratory:
1.It is unstirred with
hydraulic thermostat or electronic temperature control.
2.It can operate
temperature range from ambient to 60°C or above with safety .
3.Having a 4 –litter
capacity,
4.Fitted with a
thermometer.
5.Supplied with a lid.
Use and care of water bath:
1.Read the manufacture’s
instruction , prepare a stock record care and written SOPs converging the use ,
care maintenance of water bath.
2.Fill the bath and
maintain its level with distilled water or boiled filtered rain- water.
3.To minimize the growth
of the microorganism in the water , use a bactericidal agent such as merthiolet
at a dilution of 1 in 10000
4.Before incubating
check the temperature of the water.
5.Ensure that the level
of the water is above the level of whatever is being incubated.
6.Use the lid to prevent
loss of heat from the bath and to minimize particles from entering the water.
7.Clean the water bath
regularly , taking care, not to damage the heating unit .
8.Unplug the bath when
not using .
9.Check the bath for
corrosion the flex for wear and the plug for any loose connection for every 3-6
months.
