Safety in the Laboratory (Post-3)

Safety in the Laboratory

Auto Clave:

  1. Always follow carefully the manufacturer‘s instruction and recommendation.
  2. Locate the autoclave in a safe place particularly if using primus stove or gas burner to heat the auto clave,
  3. Do not mix loads e.g. infections and no infection,
  4. Always use the correct volume of water.

Incubator:

  1. Read carefully manufacture’s instruction and prepare a stock records and standard.
  2. Make sure athe incubator is positioned on a level surface ventilation are open.
  3. Adjust the thermostat dial until correct reading that is 35°C -37°  C for routine incubator.
  4. Clean the incubator regularly making sure, It is first disconnected from its power supply.
  5. Every 3- 6 months check the incubator and flex for signs of wear.

Calorimeter:

  1. Read carefully the manual and prepare a stock record rare and written sops.
  2. Use correct type of curette and make sure it is clear dry and free from ranges marks and scratchy.
  3. Bring the filter into place before switching on the calorimeter.
  4. Before reading the absorbance make sure it is clear no air bubbles and is in room temperature.
  5. Calibrate for each test method.
  6. If a spillage occurs immediately clear the calorimeter.
  7. Switch of the calorimeter after use at the end of the day’s work disconnects it from the battery / main socket, cover it with dust cover.
  8. Replace the lamp as instructed of correct specification.

Safe Laboratory working environment:

The safety of the working environment must take into consideration-
  1. Type of work being performed.
  2. Climate conditions.
  3. Local availability of materials.
  4. Laboratory location.
  5. Number of staff.
  6. Working practices.
  7. Security.
