Safety in the Laboratory

Safe Pipetting and Dispensing:

Mouth pipetting has been the cause of many infections.
-Injuries by chemical.
Acquiring infection by mouth pipetting:
-Accidentally sucking.
-Aerosols are produced.
-When the contaminated end of the pipette is put in to the mouth.
-Chipped end of the pipette cause cuts to the finger or lips allowing pathogens to enter.

Chemical and Reagent:

Flammable chemicals: Acetone , Mentholated spirit, xylene etc.

Safe Storage:

  1. Keep only small amount of flammable chemicals in and out side located store room that is cool and well ventilated, including at or near floor level,
  2. Do not store flammable and oxidize chemicals.

Safe Use  of Equipment:

  1. Keep the laboratory well ventilated to prevent any builder up of flammable gases and vapors’.
  2. Before opening a bottle always make sure that there in no flame with in 2 meters of the bottle.
  3. Ensure stock bottles and dispensing containers of flammable liquids are lightly closed after use.
  4. If need to heat a flammable liquid use a water both.
  5. Use strong carriers fitted with handles when transport.
  6. Do not light a match or use a lighted paper near to flammable chemical.

Safe Use of Equipment:

The safe use of equipment depends on
  • Equipment being installed and positioned correctly.
  • Equipment being used as instructed by the manufacturer.
  • Equipment being cleaned, inspected, serviced and repaired correctly.
  • Staff being well instructed the correct use of cleaning and maintenance of equipment.
  • The district laboratory co-coordinator ensuring standard operating procedure and maintenance schedules for equipment exist and are implemented.
