Safety in  the Laboratory

Important   Hazards in District Laboratories:

  • Unsafe laboratory premises
  • Naked flames
  • Microbial hazards
  • Chemical hazards.
  • Glassware hazards
  • Equipment hazards
  • Explosions
  • Un reliable water supply.

Associated Accidents that can Arise from Hazards are as Follows:

i.Due to unsafe laboratory premises:
  • Due to unsafe laboratory premises.
  • Burns and inhalation of smoke during fire may occur when emergency exit routes are blacked by equipment, storage box etc.
  • Staffs are injured by falling on a slippery on damaged floor or from broken glass left on the floor.
  • Injury from chemicals due to inadequate ventilation of laboratory.
  • Risk of infection to staff and others due to not maintaining safety measure and hygienic condition.
ii.A accident arise from Naked flame:
  • Injury form fire caused by lighted baseburner, spirit lamp etc. due to not maintaining proper safety procedures.
iii.Injury form microbial hazards:
→ Pathogens are accidentally inhaled in airborne droplets.
→  Pathogens  are accidentally ingested through the contaminated finger and mouth pipe ting.
iv.Accident due to chemical hazards:
→Toxic or harmful chemicals causing serious ill health, injury or irritation when.
→Harmful chemicals are swallowed through mouth pipetting.
→Flammable chemical causing fire due to improper maintaining of safety procedure.
→Corrosive chemical causing serious injury and burns when these come into skin contact.
