Chemical and reagent
Flammable chemicals:
Acetone, Mentholated sprit xylene.
Safe storage:
- Keep only small amount of flammable chemical in and outside locked store room that is cool and well ventilated, including ventilation at or near floor level.
- Do not store flammable and oxidize chemicals.
Safe use:
- Keep the laboratory well ventilated to prevent any build up of flammable gases and vapors.
- Before opening a bottle always make sure that there is no flame within 2 meters of the bottle .
- Ensure stock bottles and dispensing containers of flammable liquids are tightly closed after use.
- If need to heat a flammable liquid use a water both.
- Use strong carriers fitted with handles when transport.
- Do not light a match or use a lighted taper near to flammable chemicals.
Control of fires:
-By dry powder chemical
fire extinguisher.
-Fire blanket
-Dry sand
-Earth
Do not
pour water on the flame because it spreads the fire.
Oxidizing
chemicals: Ammonium nitrate, hydrogen peroxide , nitric acid, sodium nitrate,
perrhloric acid , sodium chlorate, chromic acid, potassium dixhromate, potassium
permanganate,
Safe
storage: These can produce heat so they must be stored away from other
chemicals with which they react dangerously .
Safe
use: Always handle oxidizing chemicals with care. Most oxidizing substances.
Are dangerous to skin and eyes.
Toxic ,
Harmful and Irritating chemicals: There chemicals can cause serious acute or
chronic effects even death , e.g., potassium cyanide, mercury.
Harmful chemicals:
Barium chloride, benzoic acid, potassium oxalate, saponin
xylene, iodine.
Irritating chemicals:
Ammonia solution , acetic acid, sulphosalicylic acid,
potassium dichromate.
Safe storage:
Highly toxic substances must be kept in a locked
cupboard, the others should be stored in a capboard not no and open shelves.
Safe use Irritating chemicals:
- Handle those substances with great care and wash hands immediately after use. Wear suitable protective .gloves and if indicated a face dust mask, eye shields, and a plastic protective apron.
- Ensure and eye wash bottle is in accessible to risen the eyes ..
- Whenever possible, handle chemicals (irritating harmful) in a fume cupboard or in well ventilated room.
- Before opening a chemical with an irritating vapor, place a cloth over the neck of the container and cap.
- Keep containers tightly closed.
- Never mouth pipette any chemical or reagent always use a pipette filter.
Corrosive chemicals of laboratory:
These
include strong acids ,e.g. concentrated sulphuric acid, nitric acid
,hydrochloric acid.
Safe
stroge: Stored at low level to prevent accidentally knocked off a shelf . Do
not store potassium hydroxide , or sodium hydroxide in a bottle having a ground
glass stopper because chemicals absorb carbodixide (CO2) from the
air forming carbonated which can cement the stopper in the bottle.
Safe use Corrosive chemicals:
i. Never attempt mouth
–pipetteing.
ii. Always pour a
corrosive chemical at below eye level, slowly and with great care to avoid
splashing.
iii. Wear protective
eyeglasses and a face visor or at least
eye shields when handling the bottle.
iv. Dissolve a solid
corrosive with great care in water, never add water to acid .
v. Ensure that chemicals
do not spill on the balance pan or other metal pans.
vi. Always use a strong
carrier for transporting.
Explosive:
Sodium azide , perchloric acid, picric acid and procreates ether.
Safe
storage: always read carefully the manufacture’s instructions regarding the
storage and handling.
